n the 17th Century this city became part of France, with subtle changes in language and culture. The inhabitants spoke French
but never lost their use of German as a second language. Apart from the period after the Franco-Prussian War and the period
of the German occupation, it has remained French. Being so central to so much of Europe it is now a major headquarters for
the EEC, its staff housed in the magnificent Palais de l'Europe complex on the outskirts of town. Strasbourg is also one of
the home bases of the European Parliament.
